🐢 Happy Gopher Tortoise Day! 🐢

Did you know that gopher tortoises are true ecosystem engineers? Their burrows can stretch up to 40 feet long and provide shelter for over 300 different species of animals — from frogs and snakes to insects and small mammals. Talk about being a good neighbor!

Here on Florida’s Adventure Coast, you just might spot one of these gentle reptiles as you explore local trails and conservation areas. Keep your eyes open at places like Chinsegut Conservation Center, Cypress Lakes Preserve, or along the Withlacoochee State Forest trails. If you’re lucky, you might even see a tortoise slowly making its way across the sandy path.

If you do encounter one, admire it from a distance and never try to touch or move it — they’re a protected species and an important part of our natural heritage.

Spring has officially sprung on Florida’s Adventure Coast, Brooksville–Weeki Wachee! 🌸☀️

Take a walk though the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens, enjoy the azaleas in bloom at Chinsegut Hill Historic Site, or make plans for u-picking flowers this May in Brooksville!

It's #WorldWildlifeDay, and we love hearing about your wildlife sightings on Florida's Adventure Coast!

This past winter, a male Scott’s Oriole flew far from its usual migratory path in the western US and Mexico, all the way to Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area in Brooksville!

The bird was first spotted on January 8, 2025, and remained until the end of February. Birders flocked to see it, submitting over 250 new eBird checklists for the hotspot.

Springtime is here! 🍃🐥 Staff at the Chinsegut Conservation Center were thrilled to see this Sandhill Crane and two babies near the environmental center.

With a third of our land protected in parks and preserves, #FLAdventureCoast offers plenty of wildlife sighting opportunities. Remember to keep a safe distance, and let us know what you end up spotting!
